New research suggests that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals using these treatments need to be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "highlight the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is greater among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success relies on combined lifestyle management.
